2012 Bee College
Reviews are in for UF 2012 Bee College. "It was totally fun!” Whether you´re a new-bee or an experienced beekeeper it´s worth checking out. There were classes for beginners like ´Building Equipment´ and ´Installing Packages.´ For the more advanced beekeeper the sessions were about ´Nosema Dissections´ and ´Queen Rearing.´ There were ´softer´ classes like ´Beeswax Encaustic Painting´ and Candle Making.´ And, there are tracks for ´African Bee training for PCOs´ or ´Welsh Honey Judge Training.´ The best part is donning a veil and watching as state bee inspectors with the Florida Department of Agriculture pull the top off a bee hive. We saw a 5lb package of bees with queen introduced to a hive. We found the queen, in a full brood box, and watched while she had her wing clipped and body marked. We always come home with a bag full of current beekeeping catalogs, magazines, free stuff, and a book or two. The vendors take orders and bring your goods to the show. Wow!! Seriously, there is everything and anything you ever want to know about beekeeping offered yearly at the UF Whitney Laboratory in St. Augustine.
